The Beatitudes (Matthew 5:11) #BEDA

"Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake."  -Matthew 5:11
Verse 11 is a continuation of verse 10  it speaks on the blessing of being persecuted for Christ. As mentioned in the post on the 10th verse  it could be said Christ is emphasising the purification process that comes because of persecution. The fact this idea is repeated it is as if Christ is suggesting this is part of the mandate of Christianity.

If ye be reproached for the name of Christ, happy are ye; for the spirit of glory and of God resteth upon you: on their part he is evil spoken of, but on your part he is glorified. - 1 Peter 4:14 King James Version (KJV)

Often when the notion of persecution is brought to the forefront of Christian, we may think of examples from the dark ages or the rule of pagan Rome. “Great numbers were thrown to wild beasts or burned alive in the amphitheaters. Some were crucified; others were covered with the skins of wild animals and thrust into the arena to be torn by dogs. Their punishment was often made the chief entertainment at public fĂȘtes” White, 1858, p.38

Persecution is not solely experiencing physical abuse but can also involve refuting the liberty of conscience or expression.  Silencing one from speaking on religious matters and punishing them if they speak contrary to what the masses agree with is a form of persecution.

As time proceeds the latter will become a greater reality. There will be an attempt to silence the liberty of expression and punishment for if one does not choose to follow the status quo that may contradict what God says in His Word.

When Christ stood in the mist of adversary and was falsely accused of a crime that was merely based on fabrication he did not retaliate.

They hated Him without a cause. Yet He stood calmly before His enemies, declaring that reproach is a part of the Christian's legacy, counseling His followers how to meet the arrows of malice, bidding them not to faint under persecution. - Ellen White

When you are have to give an account for your faith how will you stand?

17 But beware of men: for they will deliver you up to the councils, and they will scourge you in their synagogues;
18 And ye shall be brought before governors and kings for my sake, for a testimony against them and the Gentiles.
God has told us not to fret when in such situations,
19 But when they deliver you up, take no thought how or what ye shall speak: for it shall be given you in that same hour what ye shall speak.
20 For it is not ye that speak, but the Spirit of your Father which speaketh in you.
God will give us the words to say! We are to be like Christ when met with mistreatment,
He stood calmly before His enemies and we are to do the same. This is easier said than done. However, God will bring trials until we are like him in character. He will use this task to purify our hearts and minds so we to can stand calmly before our enemies.

May we have daily victories over the small trials so we can stand firm when the greater ones come.
