What and When is the Sabbath? #BEDA #BEDA2018

What is the Sabbath?

In this series, I will be exploring what the Biblical Sabbath is. I hope to enlighten the reader on what constitutes the Sabbath, its history, how it came about and how some have tried to change this holy day. In this post I will briefly outline some of the "whats" and the "whens" relating to the Sabbath.

The word Shabath (or sabbath in English) in Hebrew means to rest. It is a day of rest that has been instituted by God during the creation of the world. God created the Sabbath for humanity to have a day rest and reflect as Christ as the creator. "And he said unto them, The sabbath was made for man, and not man for the sabbath" -

Mark 2:27. "Saying with a loud voice, Fear God, and give glory to him; for the hour of his judgement is come: and worship him that made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and the fountains of waters." Revelations 14:7.

We first see reference to this holy day after God had completed his work during creation.

Genesis 2:1-3
1Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them.
And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made.
And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because that in it he had rested from all his work which God created and made.
The words in red refer to the day the sabbath is on. The sabbath is on the seventh day of the week. This was God’s chosen day of recreation. The words in blue mention God ending his work and resting.
If we look at a concordance the phrase he rested translates to shabath (Sabbath in English). This rest took place on the seventh day. The seventh day of the week is Saturday therefore the Sabbath is on Saturday.
Exodus 20: 8-11
Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy.
Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work:
10 But the seventh day is the sabbath of the Lord thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates:
11 For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the Lord blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.

The words previously highlighted in green refer to the sacredness of the seventh day. God calls this day a ‘holy convocation’ or a sacred assembly
Leviticus 23:3 King James Version (KJV)
Six days shall work be done: but the seventh day is the sabbath of rest, an holy convocation; ye shall do no work therein: it is the sabbath of the Lord in all your dwellings.
When does this holy day begin?

Leviticus 23:32 King James Version (KJV)

32 It shall be unto you a sabbath of rest, and ye shall afflict your souls: in the ninth day of the month at even, from even unto even, shall ye celebrate your sabbath.
Time was commonly calculated from the rising of the sun to the setting of the sun was one day (see the creation story Genesis 1-2).
An eve refers to the evening or when the sunsets, the sabbath begins when the sunsets on Friday to the sun setting on Saturday.
In conclusion,  it can be said the sabbath is on the seventh day of the week (Saturday). It is known as a day of rest, a day set apart and was instituted by God for us.
In upcoming posts I plan to look at why Sunday is kept as the day of worship. Who introduced Sunday as a day of worship? Is the  Sabbath is still binding plus more.

  1. Hmmm. . . Funny how Christians have different views on what Sabbath day is. Nice review. Looking forward to the next post.

    1. It really is. More Christians need to look at the Bible as their guide and in some instances look at the pages of history. Thank you so much for you comment! Brilliant :)
