What are you Doing with your Free time?

“Our time belongs to God. Every moment is His, and we are under the most solemn obligation to improve it to His glory. Of no talent He has given will He require a more strict account than of our time.

The value of time is beyond computation. Christ regarded every moment as precious, and it is thus that we should regard it. Life is too short to be trifled away.” – Ellen White

You may have heard the phrase tomorrow is not promised, this is quite a solemn expression but is nonetheless viable. Many often behave as if life is a given and fritter away precious moments and squander the expensive gift known as time.

Time is not always equally allocated hence why the lifespan of humanity varies. Some are given 15 years, to another 49 years and another 100 years. However, all are given 24 hours. What do you do with your 24 hours? Out of those 24 hours about 7/8 are spent sleeping, another 7 or 8 hours working therefore leaving about 6-8 hours to ‘spare’ .

I use this term loosely as if we look at the quote shared Christ regards very moment as precious, this must also include our spare time.

Some of this spare time could be the commute to work, breaks at work and the time you use to get ready. Each of these can be used more effectively. But how?

“A few moments here and a few there, that might be frittered away in aimless talk; the morning hours so often wasted in bed; the time spent in traveling on trams or railway cars, or waiting at the station; the moments of waiting for meals, waiting for those who are tardy in keeping an appointment--if a book were kept at hand, and these fragments of time were improved in study, reading, or careful thought, what might not be accomplished. A resolute purpose, persistent industry, and careful economy of time, will enable men to acquire knowledge and mental discipline which will qualify them for almost any position of influence and usefulness.”

I will refer to the above quote on how to use time effectively and outline Bible text that support that which was said.

Get up early:
Jesus is to be our ultimate example. Jesus himself was in the habit of getting up early to pray. “And in the morning, rising up a great while before day, he went out, and departed into a solitary place, and there prayed” – Mark 1:35

Avoid pointless talk:
“But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment.” -Matthew 12:36
This text is also another solemn one. Imagine having to give an account of every single word and action you have done! I believe idle talk also involves talking about an idea repeatedly and not executing it. Our lives should involve profession and performance Think of the amount of time that would be saved and the thing we would have accomplished if we just spoke less and did more.
Maximise your time:
Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might; for there is no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in the grave, whither thou goest” – Ecclesiastes 9:10
Time is a by-product of life. Without life there is no time that can be maximised. Solomon admonishes us whatever we do it well because when death comes there is no time that can be redeemed.
Thus far it has been established getting up early, talking less and doing as well as working diligently are ways to utilise our spare time.
